Making Home Digital Device Connectivity a Snap
Belkin International, Inc., a leading manufacturer of people-inspired technology products and solutions, turned to Nectar to create a keyboard-video-mouse (KVM) switch for facilitating digital device connectivity and networking in small-office-home-office (SOHO) surroundings. The company wanted the switch to help customers connect multiple personal computers to a single keyboard, video display monitor, mouse, and set of speakers to support use of all of these devices from all connected, networked computers.
Connecting Diverse Device Types
Nectar faced substantial challenges during development of the Belkin SOHO KVM Switch. The switch had to accommodate both Mac- and Windows-based personal computing platforms, while providing users with the ability to simultaneously access audio and video content from up to four separate networked computers. Another important design requirement was to make installation of the switch—in terms of both wiring and software—as easy and hassle-free as possible to further enhance the overall user experience.
Developing Multi-Device Switch with Hot-Key Capabilities
After thoroughly assessing design requirements and challenges, Nectar delivered an easy-to-use, color-coded, software-free SOHO KVM switch design. Designers made connecting color-coded cables, which match switching buttons and ports on the front and back of the unit, a snap. The universally available USB 2.0 standard for connecting keyboards, computer mice, and peripherals also extends the switch’s usability as a USB hub. Nectar added hot-key switching functionality to improve the user experience, and the switch supports video monitors with display visual interface digital and analog (DVI-I) connections.
Switching Easily across Digital Platforms
Winner of a 2002 Gold International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) from the Industrial Designers Society of America, the Belkin SOHO KVM Switch helps users increase efficiency and productivity at home or in the office by reducing desktop clutter while maintaining access to all programs and files spread across multiple computers. The device switches easily between Mac and Windows-based computers with DVI video monitor connections, requires no software installation, and is color-coded for fast, trouble-free installation.
